Case study: How we evaluated the patient value for a new insulin pen

The challenge
Our client markets a range of pen devices to deliver insulin to diabetes patients. They had developed a new feature for one of their current devices and wished to evaluate the utility of this feature to help understand if further refinement and development was required. If the research demonstrated that they should continue development, they wished to determine which patient segment would offer the greatest potential product uptake.

The solution
We used a qualitative solution in order to explore the benefits, effectively address the objectives and test the device in person.
We undertook IDIs with 32 diabetic patients and 16 diabetic nurse specialists in the UK and France, including patients on different insulin regimes and across a mix of ages.
Respondents were asked to complete a design brief in order to provide insight into the ideal features.

The outputs
From the output, we advised the client on initial product reactions and also recommended suggested amendments to the feature that would improve product uptake. We were able to identify the patient regime set that offered the greatest potential for the client and propose further tools that would be required by patients in order for them to understand and benefit from the new product feature.
